Women's wrestling is coming to Colorado Mesa University.

Beginning this fall, CMU will field an all-female wrestling team to compete in NCAA Division II.

The arrival of women's wrestling to CMU is significant considering there are only 15 college women's wrestling teams in the west, and fewer than 50 nationwide. CMU is the first institution in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to have women's wrestling.

The interest in women's wrestling is steadily growing across the country and it seems to be only a matter of time until even more colleges and universities across the country and around the world start women's programs.

Colorado Mesa has a long-standing winning tradition and reputation with the men's wrestling program. In 2015, CMU had it's first ever NCAA National Champion in James Martinez.

Being the first in the RMAC to sanction women's wrestling, the university has a great opportunity to get out of the gate first and to be recognized as the leader and premier women's wrestling program in the state of Colorado, and beyond, for years to come.

A search for a head coach has just been launched and the team will start competing this fall. Women's wrestling becomes the 27th varsity sport at Colorado Mesa competing at the Division II level.
