While camping season in Colorado usually starts around Memorial Day, who wants to wait that long?

Winter seems to want to hang around a bit longer this year, which makes the wait to go camping just that much longer. But for those who love camping as I do, you want to take advantage of a little warmer, drier weather by getting out under the stars and relax.  So let's see if we can't find a campsite or two to get our camp on!

First, what goes into making the perfect campsite? The answer changes depending on who you ask but there are a few things in common. Proximity to a lake or stream in order to get some fishing in is important as is the surroundings. Mountains, lakes, streams, trees, all of these are important as well. After all, who wants to go camping in a parking lot?

Taking that into account, here are a few places to get you camping this spring.

Camping on the Monument is exhilarating because of the views as well as the wildlife and is one of my favorite places to go. $22 camping pass plus the cost of entering the park will get you a 7 person campsite you will love.

This KOA campground has RV sites, campsites and even cabins for you to enjoy this beautiful area of Colorado. With plenty to see and do close by, you will love this place.

This site has a reputation for being clean, pet-friendly and staffed with awesome people. Located on the Grand Mesa, this is one you will want to put off until the weather is a lot warmer and drier, but you will love it here.

Ami's Acres Glenwood Springs

Family owned and operated, it has a variety of site types for all varieties of campers and is close to many things to do in Glenwood Springs. Located at the base of Storm King Mountain, it is definitely beautiful. Reservations required.

There are a few to whet your appetite, but if you go camping anytime soon, make sure you're prepared for it. Winter clothing and, if you have one, a mountaineering tent will go a long way towards keeping you a little more comfortable for those cold nights.

Obviously the longer you wait, the warmer it's going to get.
