The Pathways Family Shelter in Grand Junction opened earlier this summer and is making a huge impact on the local homeless population.

The shelter is an extension of Homeward Bound of the Grand Valley and has more doubled the number of emergency beds available to those who are homeless. The new facility is geared toward women and families with children while the shelter on North Avenue is serving single men and veterans.

The Pathways Shelter is not a permanent residence for homeless individuals but is designed do help them transition to a regular housing situation.  In addition to food and shelter, the facility features an in-house medical clinic staffed with healthcare professionals providing services to those suffering from low income and homelessness.

There is a place for children to play as well as dedicated study areas to help them focus on studies during the school year. There's also an adult quiet/study area available for training, coaching, studying, and completing job and public assistance applications. Guests have access to vocational training, case management, and sober living support.

Most of us probably can't fully relate to what it's like to be in a homeless situation, but there is a group of individuals including the Homeward Bound staff and its board of directors who are dedicated to this segment of our population and helping these people get back on the right track. While it's true there is a segment of the homeless population that has chosen that lifestyle, for many, it isn't a choice and they just need a little help. What many people fail to realize is that some people who are homeless are actually working full-time jobs.

You can take a look at the video above to learn more about the facility and to take a look inside the new Pathways Family Shelter. Grand Junction is truly fortunate to have this new facility up and running. Homeward Bound relies on private donations for most of their funding and perhaps this is an agency you would consider supporting financially.
