Grand Junction Parks and Rec Offering Fitness Bootcamp
It seems like it's tougher than ever to try and stay in shape right now, but Grand Junction Parks and Rec wants to help.
Grand Junction's gym rats were left high and dry when the coronavirus pandemic hit, forcing the closure of many public places, including gyms. It got better for a while when gyms finally reopened. But, then we got the mandatory face mask order, and at least some elements of fitness training came crashing down.
Lifting weights while wearing a mask doesn't seem to be overly problematic, but trying to run cardio with your mouth and nose covered is another story. Believe me, I tried it and it doesn't work. That means a lot of people will be doing their fitness running outside until the mask order expires.
There are benefits to running outdoors, but I find myself struggling to run at the same pace I keep on a treadmill at the gym. Consequently, my workout is not all that it could be. I need a little push - whether that is the constant and consistent movement of the treadmill or somebody telling me - nicely - to get my butt in gear.
If you find yourself in a similar boat, you might be interested in something new from Grand Junction Parks and Rec It's called the Rise and Grind Bootcamp. Beginning August 4, the boot camp will be held on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 6 until 7 at Stocker Stadium. I don't know all of the details of the workout, but they say the workout will help build and tone muscle, enhance your cardio, and you'll work up a sweat.
Can you handle one hour of sweat twice a week? Can you pull yourself out of bed and get to the stadium by 6:00? Do you need something you are committed to that will motivate you to show up and do a serious workout?
I think the boot camp sounds like a great idea. However, unfortunately, I go to work at 5:00 in the morning so it's not going to work with my schedule. But, if it works for you, go for it. You can drop in for $6 a session or buy a 10-punch pass for $50 at the Parks and Rec office.
The Rise and Grind Bootcamp may just be the bandaid fix you need to keep your fitness level up until the time comes when you can go back to the air-conditioned gym to work on your cardio. If you decide to do this, be sure and let me know how it goes. Oh, and good luck!
