Here's one more benefit to growing old - free admission to the pool.

The older we get, the more important it is to stay active, and swimming is a healthful, low-impact activity that can provide health benefits. The good news is that trip to the pool won't come out of your pocket if you are 65 or older and have a participating insurance plan.

Grand Junction Parks and Recreation is offering Silver Sneakers, a fitness program, to qualified individuals. Members of Silver Sneakers get free admission to the pool, and the insurance company reimburses the Parks and Rec department. This will also apply to Orchard Mesa Pool when it reopens.

Silver Sneakers has over 17,000 locations nationwide including the Fruita Community Center and the Bill Heddles Recreation Center in Delta. They offer classes, videos, and articles about health, nutrition, and exercise for older Americans.

Here's a fact. The older you get, the harder it is to stay active. The less active you are, the more difficult it is to do just about anything. I think people who have lived a sedentary lifestyle for so long are caught in a trap. They don't feel like doing anything, and so they remain inactive and continue to lack energy. If they would just get up and do something, like go to the pool regularly,  in many cases they would feel so much better.

To see if you are eligible for free swimming, you can visit Silver Sneakers and get registered. You can also get more information from the Parks and Rec office at 1340 Gunnison Avenue or by calling them at 970-254-3866.
