You'll find obese people wherever you go, but apparently, there are fewer of them in Colorado.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, just over 22% of Coloradoans are considered obese, the lowest percentage in the nation. By contrast, West Virginia has the highest percentage of obese people at nearly 40%.

Overall in America, it's reported that nearly 40% of adults are overweight. That translates into a huge impact when it comes to health insurance costs.  Obesity-related health care costs are estimated at $147 billion to $210 billion a year, creating more expenses for health insurance companies, who promptly pass on that expense to premium payers.

Considering Colorado's low obesity rate, it's not surprising that Colorado ranks in the top 10 of the nation's most fit states, coming in at #7, according to Quote Wizard. That ranking is based on obesity rates and the average Body Mass Index(BMI).

If you are wondering about the least fit states, you shouldn't be surprised that the bottom six are Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas, Kentucky, and Mississippi. It must have something to do with that steady diet of pan-fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn bread, sweet tea, and pecan pie.

Of course, obesity is no laughing matter. Millions of people struggle with weight issues and the risks that come with it including diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, and countless other factors.

One thing we have going for us in western Colorado is the short winter, which gives us more opportunities to be in the great outdoors and remain active. That's one key element in fighting obesity and living a healthier lifestyle.
