Montrose police shot a suspected gunman early Wednesday morning.

According to the Montrose Daily Press, police arrived at the Holiday Inn Express during the early morning hours on Wednesday. Montrose Police Chief Tom Chinn said a suspect barricaded himself in a room after threatening staff at the hotel.

Chinn adds the suspect arrived at the hotel between 5 and 5:30 Wednesday morning, at which time he demanded a hotel room. When told no rooms were available, the suspect threatened staff with a handgun and then barricaded himself in a room in the lobby.

According to the Montrose Daily Press, Montrose Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics were dispatched to the hotel. Shots were fired, at which time the suspect was wounded.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken to Montrose Memorial Hospital. His condition is not known at this time.

Due to the proximity of a Montrose County school, morning classes at Vista Charter School were canceled.
