After his sentencing hearing on Tuesday, July 30, it was decided that a Weld county man will be spending more than 30 years in prison, stemming from a 2017 case in which he fired shots at a Milliken police officer during a high-speed pursuit.

During the chase, John Lockhart reached speeds of 115 mph in a 55 mph zone, and one of his gunshots entered the officer's headlight, but the officer was not injured.

In March 2019, Lockhart was found guilty of vehicular eluding. Then, at his next court date in June, a Weld jury gave him the guilty verdict for one count of attempted second-degree murder.

At July's official sentencing appearance, Lockhart was handed the maximum amount of prison time for the second-degree murder charge – 32 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections. Also, he was also sentenced to three years for the vehicular eluding charge, which will run consecutive to the 32-year sentence.

In a press release on Tuesday, Weld Chief Deputy District Attorney Tony Perea made it clear how lucky the officer is to be alive, and that Lockhart "absolutely deserves the maximum sentence for this senseless act."
