It may come down to a question of who to believe - or not.  Yet it is alarming to discover that many of the foods we enjoy - packed with additives deemed acceptable by the FDR- are considered toxic in other countries, even to the point of being illegal. Companies are being fined hundreds of thousands of dollars for including banned substances in their food products. But, do we care?

According to the new book Rich Food, Poor Food ingredients commonly used in 80% of pre-packaged American food have been banned in other countries.

For example, Mountain Dew, Fresca, and Squirt contained brominated vegetable oil which has been banned in 100 countries because it has been linked to every form of thyroid disease.

Here's a disturbing one. The food coloring in mac  & cheese is made from coal tar which is an active ingredient in lice shampoo and has been linked to allergies, ADHD, and cancer in animals.

An ingredient  commonly found in frozen dinners and frozen potato and bread products is used to make bleach and foamed plastics. It's known to induce asthma, and In Singapore its use carries a $500,000 fine and up to 15 years i prison.

And,  according, to the book, an ingredient found in Post, Kelloggs, and Quaker brand cereals  is made from petroleum and is a known cancer causing agent.

So what do we do with this information? Most of us will do nothing -  thinking for one thing, it's too late. We have been consuming these products for years and the "damage" has been done, so why change now. We all have friends and family members who have lived into their 80s and 90s, all while consuming these very same products for decades and they have been okay.

The fact is, we don't know exactly how harmful a product is, or at what level it becomes lethal. Just because an ingredient causes cancer in mice will it necessarily cause the same cancer in a human body? How much mac & cheese would I have to consume before I start developing ADHD? Most of the stuff we consume probably isn't good for us, but does that mean it's bad for us?

I don't know the answers to these questions - and if you know the answers, please don't tell me. I don't want to know. Let me enjoy whatever time I have left on this earth by continuing to eat and drink the products that have gotten me this far. And when I'm dead and gone, you can put it on my tombstone....."He Didn't Want to Know."
