If you are like me you probably would have thought peanut butter had been around a lot longer than the state of Colorado - but, that isn't the case.

The History of Peanut Butter

Peanut butter in the United States goes back to 1884 - eight years after Colorado became a state. That was the year Marcellus Gilmore Edson obtained a patent for a method of producing peanut butter from roasted peanuts using heated surfaces. Several years later, John Harvey Kellogg - the famous cereal guy - got a patent for producing peanut butter by boiling the peanuts rather than roasting them.

Initially, peanut butter was paired with foods like crackers, celery, pimento,and watercress. The first peanut butter and jelly sandwich supposedly came along in the late 1890s when an article in the magazine Good Housekeeping urged people to use a meat grinder to make peanut butter and spread it on bread.

National Peanut Butter Celebrations

Americans definitely love their peanut butter and there are a number of specially designated days that celebrate its goodness. National Peanut Butter Lovers Day is March 1, January 24 is National Peanut Butter Day, and April 2 is National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day.
