Have You Seen Grand Junction’s Awesome New ‘Welcome’ Sign?
A new mural is going up at 5th and Main in Grand Junction. You've probably already seen it. Before long everyone will feel "welcome" in Grand Junction.
Artists are hard at work on this awesome project. Three area talents are putting what appear to be the final touches on the mural right now.
A Work In Progress - Literally
We first mentioned this project back in June of 2021. According to the website GJCreates.org, GJ Creates in partnership with Timberline Bank and the Western Colorado Community Foundation were seeking artists to complete a “Welcome to Junction” mural. Please note, that's "Welcome to Junction," not "Welcome to the Jungle." For some reason, my eyes picked that up wrong.
What They Are Wanting to Do
The parties behind this project looked to create a mural on the west-facing wall at 500 Main Street. Dimensions for the mural measure roughly 6' X 20'. The organizers were looking for artists who could incorporate images reflecting the downtown area of Grand Junction as well as the Grand Valley.
Meet the Artists for this Grand Junction Project
The artists selected for the project are T.J. Smith, A.J. Schlechten, and not pictured, Danielle Sterle. I caught them at work earlier this afternoon, Friday, November 19, 2021, at 5th and Main.
Artistic Interpretation
Much of the mural's design was left open to the selected artists' interpretation. There are, however, a few items they must include. The mural must include items from the sponsor's logo, specifically:
- timberline tree
- spiral
- colors must complement blue grey wall at 500 Main Street
How the Artists Were Selected
The winning artists were selected by:
- GJ Creates committee
- Representatives from Timberline Bank
- Reps from WCCF
- Property owners at 500 Main Street
Keep Your Eyes On This Mural
The next time you drive down 5th Street, look to the wall on the right as you pass Main Street. It's my impression the mural is nearing completion. Before long Grand Junction, like other communities in Colorado, will have an awesome new "Welcome" mural for all to enjoy.
