Mesa County is no longer under fire restrictions.

Stage 1 Restrictions Lifted

As of 12:01 Friday morning, the Mesa County Sheriff along with the Bureau of Land Management in Grand Junction lifted the current fire restrictions which have been in place since June 24. The western Colorado monsoon season has brought cooler temperatures and higher than normal humidity and rain to the region which has allowed the restrictions to be rescinded.

While the fire restrictions have been lifted, the threat of wildfires in Colorado is far from over. The western part of the state is still experiencing extreme and exceptional drought conditions, but there are several things we can do to minimize the danger of human-caused wildfires.

The Fourth of July holiday is long past, but it doesn't hurt to remind everyone that fireworks are never permitted on federal land - regardless of fire restrictions. It's also worth noting that wood fires are never permitted anywhere on the Colorado National Monument.

What About Fire Restrictions On the Grand Mesa?

The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests do not have fire restrictions at this time. Those fire restrictions were rescinded more than a week ago, which means campfires will be allowed outside of established campgrounds and recreation sites. Restrictions could be adjusted should conditions change.

Caution Is Urged

Campers are reminded to exercise common sense when it comes to campfires, which means never leaving a fire unattended and making sure fire pits and campfires are completely out. It goes without saying, but smokers still need to be careful with cigarette butts and make sure they are properly disposed of and not just tossed onto the ground.
