Colorado Mother Arrested for Allegedly Stabbing, Killing Her Two Children
Police have arrested a Colorado mother for allegedly fatally stabbing her children on Thursday (Dec. 30).
According to a Facebook post from the Glenwood Springs Police Department (GSPD), the incident occurred around 2:34 p.m. at a Glenwood Springs apartment complex, when officers received reports about a stabbing in progress.
Upon arrival, police discovered an uninvolved civilian restraining an adult female, along with two victims — an 11-year-old and an 18-year-old — suffering from "significant" stab wounds.
After securing the scene, which extended from an apartment unit into the complex parking lot, officers determined that the general public was not in danger. Authorities transported the victims to a nearby hospital, where they later died from their injuries.
Witnesses told investigators that the adult female, identified as 37-year-old Claudia Camacho Duenas and as the biological mother of the two victims, committed the stabbings, and police subsequently took her into custody. Duenas is currently in the Garfield County Jail, facing two counts of first-degree homicide.
"This type of violence is uncharacteristic for our community and our first responders (Police/Fire) are personally affected by this event," said GSPD Chief Joseph H. Deras in the post. "We recognize this affects everyone in our community and we mourn this inexplicable loss of life of these two very young people."
Police noted that Duenas is "presumed innocent until proven guilty" and discouraged the public from sharing false information on social media.
