While the subject is a controversial one, it should be noted the vote was unanimous. Also during the Thursday night meeting, it was determined that, as long as it works appropriately, school staff should not be disciplined for discussing their own sexual orientation.

At the start of the meeting, each board member stood and pronouns they identify by. One board member, Tay Anderson, received a standing ovation from the board for comments made concerning the current administration in Washington that has discussed rolling back protections for trans-gendered individuals.

Anderson was quoted as saying:

“I want to send a clear message to Washington D.C. and to the President of the United States of America that in Denver Public Schools, we believe that love always trumps hate,” said Anderson. “We are going to fight these systems of injustice together and make sure every student in Denver public schools is accepted no matter who they love or how they identify.”

Also approved at the meeting was a resolution designed to discuss secure gun storage with parents in the district.

They will now have to update the handbook that is given out to each student each school year.
