A Grand Junction building which has been home to a movie theater, hard-core gym, and dance studio, is undergoing yet another refit. Who's moving in at the old Ultimate Fitness location at 417 Monument Road?

If you go back far enough, you can recall when that building was home to the Monument Twin Cinemas. Here's a short list of some of the major motion pictures you might have seen at the theater:

  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • Poltergeist
  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
  • The Golden Child
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture

The place was happening. Some of the bigger movies of the late 70s and early 80s were shown at the theater.

Eventually, the theater closed, and after lingering for awhile, was purchased by a family from California. Before long, 417 Monument Road became home to Ultimate Fitness, a hardcore weight lifting facility. The gym's floor space came in at around 15,000 square feet, and that was before the south addition was built.

If you drive by the location now, you'll see crews hard at work refitting the building and landscaping the parking lot. What business can you expect to see there in the future? Actually, the building will now host a total of seven units for retail outlets.

I spoke with Merritt and Associates G.C. Inc, the company overseeing the project. Merritt Sixbey, the owner, says several businesses have expressed an interest in occupying units at the refurbished building. While nothing is confirmed as of this time, parties interested include a bicycle shop, a running shoe store, and a pizza shop.

This building at 417 Monument Road boasts and interesting history: Movie theater, gym, dance studio, and now business complex. Be ready for the new building and its occupants to be open to the public by the end of summer.
