Western Colorado motorists can expect to encounter DUI check points this weekend.

The Colorado State Patrol, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and other agencies will be diverting traffic through a line up of officers who will be observing motorists for signs of impairment due to drugs and/or alcohol. The checkpoint will be set up Saturday night, but the exact location has not been disclosed.

As of Wednesday, a total of 86 people have died on Colorado roadways so far in 2016. Trooper Dan Chermok says the purpose of the checkpoint is to reduce or eliminate the number of impaired drivers on the road.

The majority of Serious Bodily Injury and Fatal crashes on Colorado’s roadways have contributing factors of lack of seatbelt usage, distracted or aggressive driving or driving while impaired. One hundred percent of these factors can be stopped by prudent choices."

If signs of impaired driving are evident, motorists may be asked to perform voluntary roadside maneuvers and there may be further investigation.

It's a message repeated often, but a message that too many times is ignored. Please drink responsibly and don't drink and drive.
