We’re coming up on the weekend again, and lots of activities are on tap to help pass the time during another summer weekend.

Here’s what’s on tap for this weekend (June 7-9):

  • GJ Friends for a Cure Relay For Life team will host a fundraising lunch Friday at the Texas Roadhouse, 2870 North Avenue in Grand Junction. The lunch is scheduled from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 each, and each ticket includes a pulled pork sandwich, baked beans, Caesar salad, and a soft drink. The lunch will be served by a team of volunteers, and delivery of 4 or more meals is possible. $7 of each ticket sold goes to the American Cancer Society. For more information, call 260-4958.
  • The documentary “Veteran Nation” will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Friday (June 7) at the City Hall Auditorium, 250 North 5th Street in Grand Junction. The documentary will be hosted by James Carafano, national security expert and veterans advocate from the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. For more information, call 985-1936.
  • The first of this year’s Movies Under The Stars is set for Friday (June 7) at 16400 DS Road in Glade Park. This week’s movie is the PG-rated “Bedtime Stories.” Concessions stand will open at 5:30 p.m., grill opens at 6:00 p.m., live entertainment from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., and movie begins at dusk.   • The Art Center will host a Contemporary Art Exhibit from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday at the Art Center, 1803 North 7th Street in Grand Junction. The exhibit is part of the Art Center’s First Friday series, and will feature contemporary works in painting, printmaking, collage, photography and sculpture. The exhibit is free of charge, but will have a cash bar on hand. For more information, call 243-7337.
  • JC Productions is sponsoring a gun show Friday through Sunday at the Mesa County Fairgrounds, 2785 U.S. Highway 50 in Grand Junction. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. Friday and at 9:00 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $5 per adult. For more information, call 255-7107.
  • The 2013 Western Colorado Championships for Rope the Rockies is scheduled Friday through Sunday at the Mesa County Fairgrounds. For more information, call 255-7100.
  • The Western Colorado Astronomy Club will hold its Annual Star Party on Friday (June 7) and Saturday (June 8) at the Colorado National Monument. The event will take place at dusk both days and go for about two hours. Multiple observing sessions will take place during the event. Telescopes will be set up, and (weather permitting) participants will have the chance to see planets, springtime galaxies, star forming nebulae, and clusters. Admission is the $10 entrance fee per vehicle to enter the Colorado National Monument or use your annual pass. For more information, call 858-3617.
  • The Western Investigations Team will lead a tour of the Kannah Creek Valley, Whitewater Creek Basin, and the Grand Mesa on Saturday, June 8. Participants will learn about the cultural history of the Grand Mesa Slopes, including Ute lifeways, early explorers, and settlement in the area. Some moderate hiking will be involved.   • Highline Hustle Sprint Triathlon is scheduled for Saturday (June 8) at Highline Lake State Park, 1800 11 8/10 Road in Loma. This event includes a 500-meter swim in Highline Lake, a 16-mile bike road race, and a 3.5 mile trail run. Check-in begins at 6:30 a.m. and race starts at 7:30 a.m.
  • Heritage Days at Cross Orchards is set for this Saturday (June 8) at Cross Orchards Historic Farm, 3073 F Road in Grand Junction. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This “blast back to the past” features bee keeping, spinning, blacksmithing, gold panning, wood carving, fling napping, rope braiding, wood working, trains, and more. Cost is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3.50 for children, or $15 for a family. For more information, call 434-9814.
  • Bikers Against Diabetes (B.A.D.) will have a poker run this Saturday (June 8). The poker run will start and end at the Eagles Lodge, 1674 South U.S. Highway 50 in Grand Junction. The poker will start between 9:30 and 11:00 a.m., and end at 4:30 p.m., and will have lots of prizes. After the poker run, a dinner and dance with Ralph Dinosaur and the Fabulous Volcanos at the Eagle Lodge. Admission for the dance only is $15 at the door or $25 per couple.   • This Saturday (June 8) Creative Avenues will host a Summer Fun Kick-off Party from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Creative Avenues, 835 North 26th Street in Grand Junction (right behind the Teller Arms Shopping Center). Several workshops (all free) will be scheduled throughout the morning so that anyone who attends will have a sampling of what classes are available this summer. For more information, call 255-6757.
  • Associates of the local Ace Hardware in Clifton will face off in a fierce grilling competition called “Grill Your Ace Off.” The event will take place this Saturday (June 8) from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Ace Hardware store, 569 32 Road in Clifton. The public will have the chance to sample the creations for $1. Money raised will go to the Latimer House. For more information, call 523-0445.
  • A local authors book-signing event will take place Saturday at Barnes & Noble, 2451 Patterson Road in Grand Junction. As many at 13 Colorado authors will sign books between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. Admission is free, and books may be purchased. For more information, call 243-5113.
  • The American Cancer Society will have a Cancer Survivor Celebration Dinner at 5:00 p.m. this Saturday (June 8) at Central High School, 550 Warrior Way in Grand Junction. The event is designed for cancer survivors, and each survivor is encouraged to invite their caregiver. Activities include a dinner catered by Pantuso’s. All interested survivors should call the American Cancer Society to RSVP at 254-5584.
  • Allen Unique Autos will host the 2nd Annual Born To Be Wild Rockestra Rocker Ball Saturday evening at Allen Unique Autos, 2285 River Road in Grand Junction. The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Activities include a buffet dinner, cash bar, Rockestra concert, dancing, costume contest, and prizes. Admission is $60 per individual or $400 for a table of 8. Proceeds will benefit the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Mesa University Music Department.
  • The Rockies Baseball Skills Challenge will take place at 6:00 p.m. Sunday (June 9) at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction. The event is for ages 6 to 13 (age determined as of December 31, 2013). Participants can test their skills in batting, throwing, and base running. Winners will advance to sectional and state competitions. For more information, call 254-3866.
