It appears the sound of the forest is a lot more complex than we thought. This experiment took a cross-section of a tree trunk and put on a record player. The tree's rings, like the grooves in a vinyl record, play a beautiful, yet almost eerie, song.

The artist who created this, Bartholomäus Traubeck, used different varieties of trees including Oak, Maple, Walnut and the tree featured in the video, an Ash tree.

Traubeck says every tree has it's own unique sound because every tree has different characteristics in it's rings.

The trees themselves aren't musical in the way we think of a vinyl record being musical, so Traubeck designed a system with a camera, step motor, control arm and computer software to translate the tree's rings into musical notes.

If you enjoy this musical tree, then you'll be happy to know there is an entire album of tree music titled Years that allows you to hear samples of the songs of other trees Traubeck recorded. After listening to the samples you can purchase the tree music you like the best.
