For some, it's the turning of the leaves. For others, it's the date on the calendar. For me, it's not officially fall until I shut down the evaporative air, (aka "swamp") cooler.

While I have yet to find the time to winterize my cooler, some of my neighbors have already drained the pan, disconnected the water and put the covers on, a sure sign I should move that project to the top of the list or risk a frozen, (which means broken and leaking), water line.

Smart people run the water to their cooler from a faucet on the outside of the house.  Mine runs from the roof through the attic and down through a wall to a connection under the bathroom sink, so winterizing includes making sure all the water is drained out of the line that way when it's all reconnected and turned on again next spring, I don't encounter what some friends of ours did earlier this year. Let's just say, It's amazing how fast sheet-rock disintegrates when wet.

If you winterize your own cooler like I do, while you're up on the roof, take a moment and enjoy the bird's eye view of the fall colors and and take a breath of the crisp fall air.  That's what makes living in Western Colorado so great.
