Suspect Arrested: 2 Schools Placed Into Shelter In Place

A man who caused two Grand Junction schools to be placed into shelter in place was arrested on Thursday. The man pointed a gun at someone, and was found with meth.

According to the Grand junction Polie Department, on Thursday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. officers responded to a call about someone pointing a gun at someone in a neighborhood.

The person was picking up some belongings when the man approached him, pointing a gun at their chest for several seconds before putting it down, according to the GJPD. The victim left immediately afterward and thankfully was not injured.

Officers set up a perimeter and then places both Chipeta Elementary School and East Middle School (and other schools/childcare places) into shelter in place.

The Grand Junction Police Department used their PA system to order the suspect out of the house, and he was taken into custody around 3:45 p.m.

When officers did a search of the place, this is what they found:

• Loaded stolen handgun and ammunition
• Tactical vests
• Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia

Their suspect is 21-year-old Tyrone Gibson, who's a convicted felon. Tyrone Gibson was arrested and taken to the Mesa County Detention Facility on the following charges, according to the Grand Junction Police Department:

1. Possession of Controlled Substance
2. Felony Menacing
3. Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender
4. Violation of  Protection Order
5. Theft
6. Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
