The Sound of Music is nearly sacred when it comes to musicals, and purists are probably cringing at the thought of country icon Carrie Underwood filling the role of Maria. The question  is how will they feel after Thursday night when Underwood performs in the live television version of the classic story.

It's not that Carrie Underwood is not talented enough to pull off all of those classic tunes that Julie Andrews made us fall in love with. There's probably not a more talented singer to come along since Underwood won American Idol  way back in 2005. But, with these classic songs so ingrained into our brains for so many years, can we possibly lay aside our pre-conceived notions of what they ought to sound like and accept new interpretations and deliveries?

I love The Sound of Music and I happen to enjoy the music of Carrie Underwood, and so while I may be a bit skeptical at the result of Thursday night's live production, I am giving it a chance. The DVR is set.

Underwood tells Reuters the idea is not to re-make the movie, but rather give people a different way to see it.

The best thing is to go in with an open mind, and with few expectations. Allow yourself to experience something familiar in a new  way. I'm in, are you?
