Do You See the Sleeping Indian and Horse in Mt Arkansas?
Grand Mesa is known for its lore of animal shapes that can be seen from Grand Junction when snow covers the mountain. Those with imagination and a good eye will also find snow brings to life characters on another mountain in Colorado.
Mount Arkansas, near Leadville and Freemont Pass has it's own snow features, the 'Sleeping Indian and His Horse.' It's relatively easy to see the Sleeping Indian, but the horse is much more difficult to visualize.
Robert Gonzales, photographed the mountain and then with some illustration shows exactly what to look for.
Even without snow, you can still visualize the Sleeping Indian. His horse? Well, that one is tough unless you stare at Mount Arkansas long enough.
As long as you're in the area, another great sight is the public restrooms in Minturn.
Whether you make this a road trip of its own or a side trip to or from Denver, there are plenty of awesome sights to see.
