In case you live under a rock and missed President Obama unveiling his plan yesterday (1/16) to prevent gun violence here's the breakdown . . .

Major efforts he proposed include:

  • a call for the ban on the sale of assault weapons to be renewed
  • for ammunition magazines to be limited to 10 rounds
  • and for background checks to be required for all gun sales

The National Rifle Association, opposes all three.

Other proposals include:

  • a $150 million request to allow schools to hire more police officers
  • and actions to increase mental health services

Obama also signed 23 executive orders on more minor issues, like:

  • making more federal data available for background checks
  • ending a ban on government research into gun violence
  • requiring federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations
  • and nominating B. Todd Johnson to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

According to the KKCO website, local groups like house district 54's Jared Wright and the president of the a group that says they are standing for our constitutional rights the Mesa County Patriots, Jeff Mccloskey, their focus now, "is protecting the 2nd amendment", and that, "taking away rights isn't the answer, and they plan to fight back, at least at the state level."

You can show your support for the 2nd Amendment this Saturday during a Rally in front of the Historic Mesa County Courthouse at 544 Rood Avenue here in Grand Junction at Noon.

The flyer brought to you by the The Mesa County Patriots, Pro Second Amendment, and the Colorado Freedom Alliance says:

It's time for a look at the facts. If we are to reject the call to disarm and maintain a free man's right to self defense, we must show our communities and our representatives where we stand. What better way than a large, peaceful assembly. Help send the message that Mesa County understands: "The Right of the People to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

They also encourage the public to "Open Carry" their weapons and to "bring signs in support of the right to self defense and the second amendment".
