Mesa County Under Flood Advisory

The recent warm temperatures and increased snow melt have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flood advisory for the Colorado River near the Colorado/Utah state line and near Cameo in Mesa County.

According to NSW, river levels will reach near or above bankfull within the next day from DeBeque to Westwater Canyon including Grand Junction. The river level will continue to increase through the weekend. With increased chances for rain Thursday night through Friday, locally heavy rainfall could cause additional flow increases on the Colorado River.

At 3:00 pm Wednesday the river stage was at 10.9 feet. Bankfull state is 12 feet, and flood state is 12.5 feet. Authorities expect the river to rise to 12 feet late Thursday through early Friday and remain near bankfull before increasing to over bankfull  of 12.1 feet by Sunday before midnight. At 12.0 feet, the NWS expects minor low-land flooding to occur.

Residents are urged to exercise caution when walking near waterways and to avoid flooded areas and unstable river banks. The high water presents extremely hazardous conditions for river enthusiasts.
