Mesa County Libraries are urging patrons who owe fines to pay up, cash or can.

While this seems like a hard line for the library to take, it's actually a generous way to get your fines off the books and help feed those in need.

The Can it for Fines Amnesty Day October 19 and 20 allows fines to be paid with canned food. Each can of food donated at Mesa County Library locations will reduce the fine by one dollar. The cans of food will be donated to Food Bank of the Rockies.

If you owe a fine and want to be truly awesome, match the amount of food donated dollar for dollar with your fine. Sorry, food donations cannot be used for replacement and collections fines, so you should still pay them.
