One of the best jokes in Mel Brooks’ sci-fi spoof classic ‘Spaceballs’ comes when Lone Star (Bill Pullman) asks his spiritual adviser Yogurt (Brooks) if they’ll ever meet again once his training his complete. “God willing,” Yogurt quips, “we’ll all meet again in ‘Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.” In the decades since ‘Spaceballs’ debuted (and became a cult comedy classic), there have been occasional rumblings about a sequel. As a kid, I remember hearing unsubstantiated rumors that Brooks was interested in making a follow-up with the title ‘Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2.’ But I heard about it from the same kid on my block who claimed that the hoverboards from ‘Back to the Future Part II’ were real, so who knows.

We never did get a ‘Spaceballs’ sequel, but now we have something almost as good: A ‘Spaceballs’ parody of the ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ teaser. The way the soundtrack to the first ‘Episode 7’ trailer and the images from ‘Spaceballs’ line up is almost eerie; as if they wrote ‘The Force Awakens’ by watching ‘Spaceballs’ and then reimagining it without the jokes. It’s uncanny! Maybe this will inspire Mel Brooks, who hasn’t directed a movie in 20 years (but is currently providing the voice for a character in the upcoming ‘Hotel Transylvania 2’) to finally get back behind the camera. ‘Spaceballs: The Schwartz Awakens’ is actually a great title.

‘Star Wars: The Schwartz Force Awakens’ opens in theaters on December 18, 2015. I can’t wait for the final showdown between John Boyega and Adam Driver aboard the Mega Maid.
