So I’m passing through the kitchenette here at the office, and I observe my co-worker Brandi making coffee. I had to stop as I watched the coffee pour endlessly from the pre-measured pouch. Slowly the coffee filter was filled – probably half way to the top. I couldn’t help myself. “Are you kidding me?” I exclaimed.

Startled, Brandi replies, “What??” I explained to her that our office coffee supply would last longer if we used half as much coffee for each pot…and it would taste better, too. Suddenly, it occurred to me. We  have all been duped by coffee manufacturers and national chains like Starbucks into believing that coffee that is so strong that it tastes like a drawer of dirty socks  actually tastes GOOD. And a conspiracy is born. The stronger we make our coffee, the more coffee we use, and consequently the more coffee we BUY, and the more money we put in THEIR pockets.

Now, I realize that coffee is a matter of taste. Some like it strong and some like it mild. That’s one of the reasons we have so many options to choose from on the grocery store shelf. But, color me mild. And I’m still going to use half the manufacture’s recommended measurement for each pot of coffee brewed. I’m going to enjoy the flavor of the coffee more…..I will have more money to spend on things like golf balls, and with less caffeine entering my system it’s just possible that  my wife and co-workers will find me less irritable.
