If you've ever taken a photograph, it's likely you've crossed paths with this downtown Grand Junction family-owned business. After a long run, they've closed their doors, sort of.

Have you ever had film developed at Snap Photo at 137 N. 5th Street? If not film developing, it's possible you've been there to have VHS tapes transferred to DVD, or to have a photo enlarged, or possibly to have your passport picture taken.

Following decades of service to Grand Junction, the owners have decided it's time to retire and "start the next phase of life." I stopped by earlier today expecting to find the doors already closed for good. Surprisingly, the owners were there, the lights were on, and they were open for business.

Technically, the business closed to the public last Friday, May 29. They are keeping the doors open for the time being so that customers can pick up their orders, film, and any other transactions already underway when the store closed Friday.

We would like to thank one and all for 35 years of support. We have managed to come away with many friends from our time and you all have enriched our lives beyond measure. Thank you! - Snap Photo via Facebook

Snap Photo opened in Grand Junction on June 3, 1985. According to their official Facebook page, over the course of 35 years Snap Photo provided the following services:

  • DVD transfers
  • Home movies transfers
  • Tape conversions
  • Slide shows for weddings & funerals
  • Poster printing
  • Photo Enlargements
  • Digital Printing
  • Black & white processing
  • Slide processing
  • Slide printing
  • Photo gifts
  • Tee shirt photos
  • I Phone covers

Over the years I've done business with Snap Photo hundreds of times. For the most part, I would go to them for photo enlargements. Roughly ten years ago I did a number of exhibits featuring Robert Grant photography. I needed photos enlarged, and in some cases, enlargements made directly from the negatives. Snap Photo always did an amazing job.

So, what are those of us who still shoot film going to do when we need it processed? Well, we're in luck. The developer at Snap Photo will continue those operations at another location. MJ Thomas Photography will take film developing operations to 721 North 12th Street in Grand Junction. Their grand opening is scheduled for Monday, June 15.

I've really enjoyed taking business to Snap Photo. They're extremely nice people, and have always done amazing work. While I hate to see them go, I am happy to see them embark on a well deserved retirement. Thank you for all the years of service to Grand Junction.
