If you are currently unemployed and looking for a way to pay the bills, it may be time to go to work.

The second annual Grand Valley Career & Job Fair is happening Wednesday, April 27 at Lincoln Park, right across from the Lincoln Park barn.

Full and Part-Time Jobs Available

The Mesa County Workforce Center and Colorado Mesa University are teaming up to help employers connect with qualified workers for full and part-time opportunities. If you are willing and able to work, there is a good chance you can find some kind of work you can do to earn a living and pay your bills.

Obviously, at an event like this, there will be a variety of employers on hand offering everything from entry-level jobs to positions requiring a certain level of skill and experience. There will be jobs available that require no prior experience, while others will be very specific in their qualifications.

My Best Advice To Job Seekers

The best advice I can give someone attending a job fair is to treat the experience as if it were a job interview. The person on-site providing information and handing out job applications may or may not be the person that does the hiring, but you should always assume it is. First impressions are huge.

Don't Forget Good Personal Hygiene

You can increase your chances of getting hired - or at least getting an initial interview by presenting yourself in the best possible light. How you look is extremely important, and it starts with some basic personal hygiene. Take a shower, wash your hair, and at the very least, show up clean.

Dress For Success

You don't have to dress like a million bucks at a job fair, but how you dress can make a big first impression. For starters, wear clean clothes that don't look like they have been slept in. If you are applying for a professional position, your appearance should reflect that. Look professional. Today's society is way more casual than it used to be, but even if you are dressing casually, you can still look professional. It's called business casual.

What Is Business Casual?

According to Business Insider, the appropriate business casual dress might include "slacks or khakis, dress shirt or blouse, open-collar or polo shirt, optional tie or seasonal sport coat, a dress or skirt at knee-length or below, a tailored blazer, knit shirt or sweater, and loafers or dress shoes that cover all or most of the foot."

If the job you are seeking is more of an unskilled labor position, you don't have to dress up, but you should still look decent.

Beyond your appearance, how you present yourself can create a positive or negative first impression. Again, my advice is to treat your attendance at a job fair like a job interview.

  • Be polite and courteous.
  • Be confident and believe in yourself, but, stay humble
  • Be honest about your qualifications and skills
  • Be Friendly
  • Be flexible
  • Be open to exploring a job you qualify for, even if it may not be your dream job

The Grand Valley Career and Job Fair is Wednesday, April 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Lincoln Park.
