There are a lot of great ways to stay cool this summer and you're probably familiar with many of them. At the same time, there are some lesser known, yet simple and effective ways to help you cool down.

  • Wear damp clothes Water needs heat to evaporate and the heat from your body is drawn into the clothing causing your body temperature to drop.
  • Stick your hands in cold water. When your body temperature rises, blood is sent to the surface of the skin. Since your hands have both a lot of surface area and blood vessels, this is a great way to help your body return to a normal temperature.
  • Eat spicy food. The heat compound in chili peppers and curry stimulates sweat production and sweating helps your body with evaporative heat loss.
  • With clothing, fit is more important than color. Many think lighter clothing will help you stay cooler, but even more important than color is comfort. The looser the clothes, the cooler you'll be. That's because loose clothing allows more air between the skin and clothing and that helps sweat evaporate faster.
  • Take a lukewarm shower. While cold water works for areas like your hands, taking a cold shower causes your body to try to preserve heat, so the secret is to have the water warm enough draw heat to the surface and at the same time cool the skin.
