Southwestern Colorado's Pagosa Springs is a very cool place to visit and here are five facts to prove it.

Pagosa Springs is not a highly populated town (about 1800), but it is a popular place to visit and there are plenty of reasons for that. However, it's possible you may have to look beneath the surface to find the jewels that await you. There's a golf course and brewery, but a whole lot more.

This is a look at five totally cool reasons to visit Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

1]  SOOTHING HOT SPRINGS
As the name of the town implies, Pagosa Springs is known for its therapeutic hot springs like the Springs Resort &  Spa, Healing Waters Resort & Spa, and the Overlook Hot Springs Spa. There is also a free natural pool under the bridge on Hot Springs Boulevard. The Ute Indians came up with the name of the town, translated by a Ute elder to mean "water that has a bad smell."

2] BEAUTIFUL WATERFALLS
If you are looking for cool waterfalls, Pagosa Springs makes a great destination.
Nearby,  you will find Piedra Falls, Fourmile Falls, Silver Falls, and Treasure Falls, on the west side of Wolf Creek Pass. Be sure and bring your hiking shoes and your camera.

3] FANTASTIC RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES
South of Pagosa Springs is Navajo State Park, providing plenty of opportunities for boating, fishing, camping, and viewing wildlife. The huge15,000- acre reservoir offers 150 miles of shoreline, including three campgrounds.

4] LOTS OF GREAT SNOW
Wolf Creek Pass is just 23 miles away and is a great ski destination because annual the mountain receives more snow than any ski slope in Colorado. It's not as glamorous as a lot of Colorado's ski resorts, which means they have great skiing conditions without the massive crowds.

5) ANCIENT INDIAN RUINS
If you are a history buff, you will be interested in Chimney Rock National Monument. Guided tours are offered May through September. You will find seven square miles, featuring some 200 ancient homes and ceremonial buildings of Ancestral Puebloans. The Tour of the Ancients will take you back in time.
