Oftentimes, scammers use local law enforcement agencies to perpetuate their fraudulent schemes, but this is not one of them.

We've seen it all before, whether it's a phone call, an email, or someone at the front door -- a scheme to get your hard-earned money - all in the name of a local police agency. That's why we want to let you know about this fundraiser that is not a scam.

How Does the Fundraiser Work?

A letter has gone out recently to Colorado residents asking for donations to the CSOC  - County Sheriffs of Colorado. This is a legitimate organization and this fundraiser is 100% legitimate. In Mesa County, the letter is signed by Association President and Mesa County Sheriff Matt Lewis, and in Delta County the letter is signed by Sheriff Mark Taylor.

The Delta County Sheriff's Office posted information about the fundraiser on their Facebook page, including a copy of the letter so people can know exactly what it looks like. Respondents are asked to join or renew their membership to the CSOC. The $30 membership gets you a personalized membership card, two commemorative decals, and a subscription to their publication Colorado Sheriff.

Where Does the Money Go?

The funds raised through this membership drive are used to "provide professional training, promote drug and crime prevention, and improve public safety," as well as the Sheriff's Youth Scholarship Program.

You Will Not Get A Phone Call

One thing to know is that you will not get a phone call about this. It's a once-a-year-fundraiser and the CSOC does not solicit donations over the phone. If you get a call asking for donations to the sheriff's fund on the phone, you should report it to local authorities.

The bottom line is this fundraiser by mail is on the up and up, and it's a worthy cause. It's definitely up to you if you want to support the CSOC with your membership.
