When thinking about Skiing in Colorado many people think of Vail or Aspen but the good news for skiers and snowboarders across the state is there will be another public ski area that is planning to be open next season. A ski resort that had been shut down for 20 years, but according to KRDO, the Cuchara Ski Resort will be reopening.

The ski resort had previously been open from 1981 until 2000 with several different owners during that period of time. But the lack of snow and how remote the ski area is are just a few reasons why the property ended up closing down.

But people that live in the area are saying that more tourists are making their way to that area. And it's about the same amount of distance from Colorado Springs to Cuchara Ski Resort or the more popular Monarch Mountain Ski Resort. Some are hopeful that skiers and snowboarders will go with the less popular option of Cuchara.

Back in 2017 Huerfano County acquired the base of the resort and have added an 18-hole disc golf course. Plus locals ski, snowboard, and sled on the 20-plus ski run during the weekend.

The non-profit Cuchura Foundation raised $250,000 in donations to buy the property and hope to have the main ski lift back in operation next season. They will need about another $50,000 as they continue to work to be open next season.

They will make their own snow, due to unreliable winter conditions, and plan to keep expenses and lift tickets low to avoid the crowds at other resorts.

We will be sure to pass along the message as soon as they are open.
