Colorado High School Spring Sports Seasons Canceled
Nobody is shocked and surprised, but there's certainly plenty of disappointment.
The Colorado High School Sports Association (CHSAA) has officially announced the cancelation of the spring sports season.
In an open letter to student-athletes, coaches, and administrators, CHSAA Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green said they have been holding on to a "thread of hope" that the spring sports seasons could be held. However, that is not the case and the spring season has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Blanford-Green says the decision to cancel the spring season aligns with the directives handed down on Monday by Colorado Governor Jared Polis which included the cancellation of in-person learning for the rest of the school year.
While life will go on without spring high school sports, it's a huge disappointment for many Colorado high school athletes, especially for seniors who are missing out on their final opportunity to perform and participate at the high school level.
The months ahead are filled with uncertainty in regards to how Coloradans will resume social activities including sporting events. Questions remain about the viability of conducting fall high school sports, but the CHSAA commissioner said "our fingers are now crossed and our hopes are that the Association will be able to conduct a fall season with some level of normalcy. Our office will be entirely focused on contingency plans for the 2020 fall season and beyond, should they be needed."
