CMU Mavericks Host Top-Ranked CSU Pueblo

A peek into the future?

That's the plan.

The Colorado Mesa University football team hopes it is looking into the future as the Mavs look across the field at Stocker Stadium during Saturday's 6 p.m. game at the visiting CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves.

CMU is in the first year under head coach Russ Martin, who has put together a great coaching staff and is going through some first year growing pains. The Mavs bring a 3-5 overall record and a 3-3 slate in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to Saturday's game.

Back in 2008, John Wristen took over a program at Pueblo that was starting back up after not having football at the school from 1985-2007. The Thunderwolves managed a 4-6 mark that year, 3-6 RMAC. The Thunderwolves got better each season and made the Division II playoffs last season before losing in the second round to Minnesota-Duluth.

On Saturday, CSU-Pueblo comes to Stocker as the No. 1 team in Division II football. The Thunderwolves (8-0, 6-0 RMAC) also boast D-II's longest regular season winning streak at 23 games.

So, don't think the Mavericks will be awestruck when playing the top team in the country. Rather, the Mavs have put together a game plan to try to end that win streak.

And if CMU doesn't turn the ball over six times like it did in last week's loss to Colorado School of Mines, it has a chance.
