2020 has certainly been a tough year for sports. Major League Baseball was forced to shorten their season, the Grand Junction Rockies were forced to cancel their season altogether, and up until recently, it was unclear if Colorado Mesa University was going to be able to have fall sports at all. However, CMU has announced that they plan to allow fall sports to take place, but with some new regulations.

Fall college sports will begin practices on August 24th and will be starting competitions on September 18th, according to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. However, unlike previous years, these college athletes are going to be getting tested for COVID-19...a lot.

CMU has said that every college athlete will be required to be tested for COVID-19 within 72 hours of every game, competition, etc. to avoid the possibility of anyone spreading the virus to any of the other athletes.

CMU head football coach Tremaine Jackson had this to say about the new plan:

“Ultimately we’re not going to do anything that’s going to harm anyone, but we do want to play the game, and if there’s a safe way to play it, the way we’re researching and doing things with our health officials, we’re going to find it.”

If despite testing negative within 72 hours of a game an athlete becomes infected with COVID-19, the entire team will be forced to sit the next game out.

It's unclear if and how fans will be social distancing at these sporting events, but it's great to see that CMU has put together a plan to allow student-athletes to participate in sports this fall.
