The Colorado Mesa  Mavericks baseball team has earned the number one ranking in the first South Central Regional poll released this week.

The Mavericks are 31-8 on the season, with 8 regular season games to play - at Regis this weekend, and at Colorado Mines next weekend, before beginning play in the RMAC tournament.

The Mavericks were followed in the rankings by West Texas A&M (31-12), Texas A&M-Kingsville (29-14), 2013 South Central Region Champion St. Edward's (31-11), St. Mary's (30-14), and Angelo State (25-19) to round out the top six. The top seed following conference tournaments will host the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament.

One year ago, the Mavericks were first in the initial regional rankings, but dropped to second after a loss to Regis, despite having a better record than the eventual #1 seed. So, there's still a of baseball to be played, and anything can happen.

The Mavericks start the weekend 3 1/2 games ahead of New Mexico Highlands in the RMAC. The team with the best winning percentage in the conference will host the RMAC tournament.  For the Mavericks, hosting both tournaments could be huge, considering the fact that are unbeaten at home this season at 24-0. The team that wins the regional advance to the World Series in Cary, North Carolina. The Mavericks last world series appearance was in 2009.
