Beatles, Stones Dominate List of Top Albums of All-Time

Trying to make a list of the greatest albums of all time is like trying to figure out what the best flavor of ice cream is. There are so many good ones, so many different opinions, and often times much different criteria for making judgement. But, Entertainment Weekly has ranked 100 of the greatest albums ever in their latest issue and, not surprisingly, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are among the artists that made the biggest impact on the list. The Beatles topped the tally with their 1966 classic, Revolver, which, the magazine notes, "pioneered the idea of a rock album as a singular, complete entity." Three other Fab Four albums also made the cut: 1968's The Beatles -- aka "The White Album" -- was #12, 1969's Abbey Road was #22 and 1965's Rubber Soul was #46.

The Stones' 1972 album Exile on Main Street landed in the third spot, while 1968's Beggars Banquet and 1978's Some Girls were #20 and #35, respectively. Other veteran pop and rock artists with albums in the tally's top 10 are Prince, whose Purple Rain landed #2; Michael Jackson, whose Thriller was #4; Bob Dylan, who made #6 with Blood on the Tracks; Aretha Franklin, coming in at #7 with Lady Soul; and The Beach Boys, at #9 with Pet Sounds.
