You Can Get a Hemp Agriculture Degree in Colorado
Beginning in the fall semester of 2021, you'll be able to study hemp agriculture here in Colorado.
The program will be offered by my alma mater, Colorado State University-Pueblo (CSU-Pueblo,) and will focus not on the psychoactive or healing properties of the plant, but rather the agricultural side of hemp and how it can be used industrially.
Ever since cannabis was legalized in Colorado, CSU-Pueblo has been leading the way in education in relation to the plant, as the school has been home to the Institute of Cannabis Research since 2016 and offers several degrees related to marijuana.
The new program, officially known as CSU-Pueblo's Industrial Hemp Education, Agriculture and Research or InHEAR for short, will be funded in part by a $275,000 grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
While the InHEAR program will be unique to CSU-Pueblo, there are already similar degrees offered at several other institutions across the country, including Cornell University, Murray State University in Kentucky, Santa Rosa Junior College in California, and Dakota College at Bottineau in North Dakota.
Students that elect to enroll in the InHEAR program will be required to take an internship with one of the university's many hemp industry partners or piggy-back their studies with one of the college's already established programs at its Institute of Cannabis Research.
CSU-Pueblo is known for being the alma mater of former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino, its impressive football team, The Thunderwolves, as well as the home to one of the best performing college radio stations in the state, Rev 89.
