Crews fighting the Bull Draw Fire northeast of Nucla have seen little containment of a fire that has slowed but continues to grow.

However, a little is better than none and firefighters are hoping the weather conditions will be favorable as they attempt to further contain the fire which as of Thursday morning (August 2) had burned approximately 3815 acres and is only 5% contained.

The lightning-caused fire, 12 miles northeast of Nucla, is in an area full of pinyon, juniper, and sagebrush. The fire is currently spreading east into an old burn scar and north onto the Uncompahgre National Forest.

Firefighters are focusing their efforts on protecting private property and resources at risk along the east side of the fire. Crews are also working in an area off of U18 Road to secure a fire line, patrol for hot spots, and evaluate damage in the burn area.

  • Forest Service Roads 425, 598, and 668.
  • Trails 616, 617, 622, 623, 624, and 625.

Because of this and other fires, the Colorado Department of Public Health has issued an air quality advisory for much of western Colorado.
