Just past the halfway point of 2018, the number of traffic fatalities in Colorado is approaching 300.

During any given year, we can expect approximately 600 individuals will lose their lives on Colorado roads, and 2018 is shaping up to be a typical year.

Every Wednesday, road sign messages on Colorado highways display the current number of fatalities in Colorado so far this year. It is hoped the messages will serve as a reminder to motorists to buckle up, eliminate distracted driving practices, and to drive sober.

In 2017, there were 648 fatalities on Colorado roads, up from 608 in 2016, and dramatically up from 2015's 548 deaths.

In Mesa County, 9 people have died in traffic accidents, with one in Delta County, and 2 in Montrose County.

These are people just like you and me with family, friends, jobs, and plans for the future. But, whether it's because of distracted driving, impaired driving, or simply unfortunate circumstances, lives are being snuffed out daily on Colorado roads.

This should remind all of us to be alert when we are traveling. Don't drink and drive, don't allow yourself to be distracted, and don't let yourself to be a victim of road rage - either yours or somebody else's.
