Residents living in and around Rifle reported seeing smoke on Wednesday (April 5), but what's creating that smoke isn't new or particularly concerning.

The Post Independent says what people are describing as smoke or steam on a ridge in the area of County Road 245 near Rifle, is from a burning coal seam.

Colorado River Fire Rescue is monitoring the seam which occasionally will vent, making visible the coal seam's activity.
