It is very interesting to watch local reactions unfold as the COVID-19 vaccination process rolls on.

Opinions and feelings about the vaccine in Mesa County are as wide and varied as the political views that divided residents during the recent presidential election. That is to be expected.

Not Everyone Is Doing It, and That's Okay

So far, about 20,000 first doses of the vaccine have been administered in Mesa County and about 6,000 second doses.

On the one hand, you have those who are eager to get the shot for their own protection and for those around them. On the other hand, you have a percentage of the population that is skeptical, hesitant, fearful, or defiant -and are strongly opposed to getting the vaccination.

It is not my intention to share my opinion or to be critical of anyone else's perspective. Everyone is entitled to their own feelings about the vaccine. Just as we have differences in our political views, we should be able to be different without being angry, belligerent, and degrading.

Recently, many local residents shared with Mesa County Public Health why they were getting the vaccine. MCPH shared some of the messages on social media and I wanted to pass them along because they are so positive and uplifting.

Here Is Why These Mesa County Residents Are Getting Vaccinated

  • "I believe in science and care about everyone being safe."
  • "I want to get back to normal life."
  • "To protect me, my family, my community."
  • "So I can visit my mom."
  • "To protect my students."
  • "I miss my grandma."
  • "I want to protect myself and others. Stay safe."
  • "I want to keep my family and friends safe and healthy. I also want life to go back to normal."

One of the things I appreciate about so many of these comments is the fact they focus on others. It's not all about me, myself, and I.

Do What's Right For You

But, let me be clear. I'm not shaming anyone for not getting the vaccine. There are a number of valid reasons why some people should not and are not getting vaccinated. But, that's my point. Whatever you decide, do it for the right reason. Don't get vaccinated because you feel pressured by friends, family, co-workers, and employers. By the same token, don't avoid the vaccine simply because you have people in your circle who are opposed to it or because you are worried about some false conspiracy. You have to do what's right for you.
