Prepare For Massive Snow-Melt This Weekend

Colorado creeks and rivers will be running high after this weekend.

Summer officially arrived on June 21st. Not in Colorado. The calendar said otherwise but heavy snow, in some parts up to 20 inches or more, fell in the higher elevations on summer's opening weekend. Blowing and drifting snow forced the closure of the Trail Ridge Road inside the Rocky Mountain National Park.

What a difference a week makes. Aspen and Breckenridge received some heavy snow last weekend. This week they expect to see highs in the 70's and low 80's. The weekend Aspen forecast from the National Weather Service says...

The remaining snow in the Colorado high country is expected to melt quickly with those kinds of afternoon temperatures. Starting this weekend and into next week, the high, raging water will only become more treacherous with the massive snowmelt. If you're thinking about hitting Colorado’s rivers and waterways, prepare for fast moving and powerful water!

This early in the rafting season, already 6 people have lost their lives in river-related accidents. The current death toll is on track to break the previous record of 15 water-related deaths in 2017.
