The sunsets in Western Colorado are some of the most beautiful I have seen.

There are a lot of reasons for this. The elevation, the cloud formations, whether or not there is anything else in the air, (like smoke) and of course whether or not it's cloudy.

What causes a lot of the beauty we see are small particles and molecules in the air that catch the sun's rays and scatter them, causing the color splash we all know and love.

It's called scattering and is explained quite well when you stop to consider the fact that in the mornings and evenings, the sun is at its lowest, and so the sunlight passes through more air than any other time of the day, causing more scattering. Violet and blue light get scattered, leaving the beautiful reds, yellows, and oranges we wait for at sunset.

Take a look at a few I have collected over the last few days, then add yours to them and let's all celebrate Colorful Colorado!
