If money is tight in your household, here's how you can get a free backpack and school supplies for your kids before the beginning of the school year next month.

The Salvation Army in Grand Junction is doing its annual backpack distribution program, and Mesa County residents who are in need should take advantage of the opportunity.

A total of 850 kids will receive free backpacks loaded with school supplies, thanks to the Salvation Army.

The backpack/school supply is for all grades kindergarten through high school, but the distribution dates vary based on the age of the children. Middle and high school students need to be registered prior to July 15.

The distribution of backpacks will begin July 16 for middle and high school students with a concert by national recording artist Lara Landon at the Salvation Army Corps office on north 4th Street. Breakfast will be served prior to the concert, and backpacks will be handed out following the musical presentation.

Elementary school distribution will begin on July 25, and the registration deadline is July 22.

Those that are interested in receiving this assistance should bring proof of income, current utility bill, and identification for everyone in the household. Any questions should be directed to Dusty at the Salvation Army at 242-7513.
