Grand Junction mailman Pedro Mendoza is a straight-up hero. He came to the rescue while on his route by tackling a man who was threatening others with a knife.

Pedro was on his usual mail route on Monday evening and was almost done for the day when he saw something that he couldn't just walk away from. A man with a knife was threatening a woman and her baby outside of a home on W. Ute, according to KKCO.

The man was coming toward the woman and the baby with a knife saying 'I'm going to kill you and your baby, and I'm going to slice his throat' according to Pedro. A neighbor, Carlos Garcia, intervened and then the man started coming toward Carlos with a knife. This is when Pedro knew he had to step in.

The man asked Pedro 'oh you want some of this?' and then started swinging his knife around. Pedro tackled the man with the knife, while Carlos got the knife away from him. The 29-year-old told Pedro to let him go, but he didn't and waited until the cops got there. The man was resisting so much that Pedro and Carlos had to help the officer put the handcuffs on the man.

The man with the knife is now facing the following charges:

  • 1st-degree assault with a deadly weapon
  • Disorderly conduct
  • Resisting arrest

According to Carlos, Pedro always goes above and beyond -- always. The Grand Junction Police Department says both Carlos and Pedro went above and beyond, and they appreciate the selflessness they displayed in helping where it was needed. Pedro has been deemed a local hero and says that he would do it again in a heartbeat because his customers are like his family.

We're happy to have somebody like you here in the Grand Valley, Pedro.
