Grand Junction K9 Officer Nero will soon be sporting new duds in the form of a state-of-the-art stab and bullet resistant vest.

The new vest is the result of fundraising efforts on behalf of the Colorado Police Canine Association and the Fruita Police Department.

The vest, provided by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., comes in at roughly four to five pounds and runs somewhere around $2,000.00. The protective gear, proudly made in the USA, even comes with a five-year warranty.

Nero's new vest will bear an inscription:

In loving memory of K9 Gero, EOW 5/6/04.”

Gero and his handler, Officer Earthman, were responding to assist another officer when Gero was shot and killed by a wanted fugitive.

Nero will receive his new vest in a couple of months. In the meantime, if you would like to volunteer with Vested Interest in K9s, call 508-824-6978.
