Spring on the Western Slope  means HOT weather, HIGH waters and every year DEATH! Here's some warning, tips and reminders!

In light of the recent river tragedies, one local resident Brian Cohee has set up the "Save a Life Jacket" program for residents using the Colorado River! According to KREX Brian is going to place PFDs at local launch pads for anyone to use FREE!

I suggest while the water is at these EXTREMELY high levels that instead of risking your life to have a good time, why not call one of the local companies recommended by the Grand Junction Visitor Center?

High water is great for rafting but SAFETY 1st, 2nd & 3rd!!

  1. Include a helmet and always wear your PFD (life jacket)
  2. Know your limit when rafting in various stages of runoff.
  3. Know when and where a river needs a permit from the Bureau of Land Management.

Several portions of the Riverfront trail are closed including:

  • Blue Heron Trail from Junior Service League Park to Geese Statue
  • Monument View Trail from West boat ramp to Appleton Drain
  • Blue Heron Trail from High Country Court to the Blue Heron II parking lot
  • Jarvis section of the Riverfront Trail from just West of the railroad bridge to the botanical gardens

Prevent heat stress, illness and injury with these tips from The Mesa County Health Department

  • Wear sunscreen daily.
  • Wear insect repellent with DEET, picaradin or oil lemon eucalyptus to protect against mosquito bites, which can transmit West Nile Virus.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Keep kids and pets out of parked cars, even with the windows down.
  • Be sure your tetanus vaccine is up to date.
  • Pay attention to food temperatures when planning or attending a picnic, barbecue or potluck.
  • Before mowing, clear the lawn of any rocks, sticks or children’s toys.
  • Swim with a buddy.
  • Stay on the trail when hiking. Tell someone else where you are going and when you expect to be back.

Whatever you do have fun out there and stay SAFE!
