Firefighters Left Apology Note At Grand County Home

Who would have thought that a simple note could mean so much. It just goes to show how much, at the end of the day, we humans value kindness and support. I'm not crying you're crying.

Residents of Grand County have been through a lot this week with a late evening notice last Tuesday to evacuate their home, some fleeing with only minutes to spare.

The East Troublesome fire in Grand County has claimed many homes as well as the lives of a couple in their eighties, who chose not to evacuate their beloved home.

A team has been moving through Grand County helping to winterize homes for evacuees when they discovered a note left at the home of Daniel Stones.

“If this note finds you we must have done something right. Sorry for the loss of your shed and we had to cut a little of your wood fence to save your house. Things got really hot we stayed as long as possible. Best wishes, Engine 1446, Meeker, Co. 81641,” the note said.

Stones told Fox 31 News, "I’m a grown man and I can admit this, I wept. It was just so touching. It’s been such an emotional roller coaster after the past week and to get something that is not only confirmation but good it’s just so overwhelming.”

Upon learning about the note, Stones created a GoFundMe page for the fire department that saved his home.

The Engine 1446 team told Fox 31 Denver, “It is kind of surreal, we all don’t really do this job for the limelight,” South Zone Fire Management Officer Kyle Fray said, adding “The main thing for us is we’re really glad he’ll be able to go to his house and it’s still standing.”
